The Georg Solti Accademia wishes you a wonderful festive season

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CANDICE WOOD

Georg Solti Accademia extends
its programme to China

Following our successful bel canto masterclasses in Beijing, in July we welcomed 14 high-level singers from 11 nations to Castiglione della Pescaia. They had the opportunity to encounter a host of great artists from the opera world: Angela Gheorghiu, Carmen Giannattasio and Richard Bonynge  –  each bringing different strengths, ideas and approaches. Carmen enjoyed the masterclasses so much she decided to cut short her holiday and return for another day of teaching, much to the delight and surprise of the students.

In August, four of our alumni were invited to perform in the concert d'été in Geneva with the Orchestra de Chambre de Genève, part of a rewarding ongoing partnership with the orchestra and the Ville de Genève. In 2017 we have projects in no fewer than four locations: Switzerland, China, Italy and London. Our warmest thanks go to all those who believe and support the Accademia in its mission to preserve and nurture the Bel Canto tradition.

"Just looking through the applications, I know that 2017 will be an even more rewarding programme"

Vintage Summer of bel canto

What an astonishing Summer. We had the rare opportunity to assist 14, rather than 12, talented students this year, and the faculty and visiting stars made a great success of it.

We were so fortunate in having the extraordinary Carmen Giannattasio join us, a singer I have so admired, both on stage, and in the work we have done together. She was astonished at the level of this group of singers, and her teaching was precise and dramatic. She enjoyed herself so much, she came back and did an extra period with the students, hugely appreciated by all. Angela Gheorghiu made a welcome return visit, again marvelling at the level, and Richard Bonynge was as inspiring and demanding as ever, guiding them through, and into, the bel canto style. Sadly, Massimo Giordano's Don Carlo in the Escorial Palace meant he had to cancel. He will join us in 2017.

The fourteen singers prepared themselves rigorously for every class, private and public, and for the final concerts. Progress was impressive, not least from the winner of a place from our Beijing project, Yang Zang, who only grew in finesse and his ability to express himself musically and dramatically.

We already look forward to our next participant from the Beijing satellite GSA project. Repertoire for this 2016 edition proved to be the most varied yet – everything from an awe-inspiring rendition of Bellini's Casta Diva, to Donizetti's beautiful Angelo Casto e Bel. Looking through the applications to-date for next year, I know that 2017 will be an even more rewarding programme.

I had the best time at the Accademia and realise that the people have absolutely made it for me. It was such a great group and I felt privileged to be one of them.  If this was a 3-month programme that would literally be a singer’s paradise!

Alex Otterburn
The Georg Solti Accademia has been one of the most beneficial things I have ever done. If I could do this once a year, I think I’d be the best singer I could be. The stand out class of the course was Carmen’s, she said some very interesting and useful things. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn in Castiglione and I will remember it my entire life.
