Reflections on the Solti-Peretti Repetiteurs’ Course this April

It is with deepest regret that I have to share our sadness on the death of Sir Jeffrey Tate. We were honoured, and lucky enough, that Jeffrey was able to join us at the beginning of the Solti-Peretti repetiteurs’ programme in April. He gave the young pianists a baptism of fire with a long and intense day dedicated to the opening of Act 3 of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung.

This was to have been the beginning of an ongoing relationship with Jeffrey and the GSA. In fact, only the previous evening, and on the day of his death itself, we had begun discussions about how Jeffrey's vast experience and teaching could be used for the following year, and on into the future. It is with gratitude we remember his life and musical legacy, one of Sir Georg Solti’s most gifted protegés.

This year, along with Richard Bonynge and James Vaughan, we were joined by the extraordinary American pianist and musician, Dr. Mark Markham, long-time recital partner to Jessye Norman. A major focus of the programme was the level of pianism, the technical issues that needed attention to make the sounds and colours required, and of course the coaching of singers. As ever, we were joined by a very talented group of young singers, including baritone Paul Grant and soprano Ilona Revolskaya who’ll be coming to this year’s Bel Canto course, to those already singing at the Mariinsky, Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne. This group of young pianists climbed a steep learning curve and made exceptional progress, resulting in a very fine concert, which included a moving performance of Verdi’s La Forza del destino’s overture arranged for five grand pianos.

The Summer Bel canto programme in Tuscany is now in preparation, and we look forward to welcoming some extraordinary talent from all over the world – from Russia to China.  You will have the opportunity to read more about each of them later in this newsletter, plus feedback from this year's repetiteurs.

Finally, we are hugely excited about our upcoming GSA recital and live recording in the Victoria Hall, Geneva: Una Serata a Napoli. This is on Sunday 12 November 2017, and features some of our most talented alumni, who are already starring in opera houses and festivals all over the globe!

We hope to see many of our friends and supporters at this exciting event.

NEWS OF OUR GSA ALUMNI

The Cardiff Singer of the World is underway this month, and we wish the very best to two of our recent alumni who have made it into the selection of 20 finalists: Ukrainian tenor, Iurii Samoilov, (GSA 2010) who has since been a member of Frankfurt Opera, and this summer takes on the title role of Billy Budd at the Bolshoi Theatre; and Armenian soprano Anush Hovhannisyan, (GSA 2016), who this winter season makes her Scottish Opera debut as Violetta in La Traviata.

Soprano Katie Lowe (GSA 2013) has just been taken on by IMG Artist Management. Katie took on the title role as Suor Angelica for Manchester Opera Ensemble last year and will be singing Brünnhilde in Act 3 of Götterdämmerung under David Syrus in October 2017.

South African tenor Thobela Ntshanyana (GSA 2016) was awarded the Clonter Music Prize last year and will join Zurich Opera this September.

She is managed by Askonas Holt.
